Discussion:
"Fractal decoder" software
(too old to reply)

I'm looking for something that I'm not entirely certain exists.
Software that can take a generated image of a fractal (i.e., bitmap or
jpeg files) and "decode" the parameters of the fractal from the
picture alone. Is this even presently possible? Any and all replies
appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Wouldnt you rather find fractals in an image?

Sure! :-) However, the reason I'm seeking this sort of program is
that I've got some pretty nifty fractals I'd made in the past, and
have since lost the formula for them. So far, I haven't been able to
duplicate some of my favorite ones - I was just playing around without
a clue what I was doing when I made them. It'd be kinda' nice to be
able to have a program that can tell me what the parameters of the
fractal in the picture most likely are.

If people could decode fractal images, no one would post images or put them
on their websites. They would keep all images to themselves.

<snip>

Hmmmnnn. Hadn't thought of that. I think I understand it, though.
It would make sense if specific fractal arrangements (including colors
and effects) were subject to copyright. On that note, I'm going to
assume my quest is finished. But I'll leave behind a "just in case"
trail of bread crumbs in the event that these little crumbs matter:

What I was looking for probably wouldn't work on processed images,
only on raw, single-layer originals. I don't need to be able to
decode the gorgeous masterpieces drifting about the 'net, I'm not
interested in stealing anyone else's art or ideas. As such, decoding
the color schemes would also be unnecessary. I just wanted something
that could approximate a relatively decent guesstimation of the
mathematical formula for the fractal, itself, regardless of color
schemes and such.

Like I said, I'll assume my search is over and won't expect any more
replies to this. But I'll check anyway for another day or so just on
the off chance that the above makes any difference whatsoever. Thanks
either way! :-)

In theory this is possible. In practice it would take a lot of
processing time, given the infinite nature of these equations and
calculations. Even if you limit the search to a single fractal (say
the Mandelbrot set), without very limited search parameters, the set
contains an infinite number of possible images.

But if you post the images, you could be lucky that someone else have
made similar fractals and could help with possible equations and
parameters.

How did you do your fractals to have lost your parameters? Was it with a
special software? If so, would you mind tell me which?
Thank you

There are several people capable of reproducing, or coming very close
to, a basic single layer (and unprocessed) fractal image just by viewing
it. If you post these images to one of the fractal graphic related
newsgroups, or one of the many online groups, along with your request as
to what may be the formula and parameters, you might be surprised by the
response.

For fractal related postings, be sure to view these Usenet Newsgroups:
